Study MBBS in Russia: a complete guide for Indian students

For decades Russia has been one of the best-known destinations for Indian students studying medicine abroad. Its government medical universities are large and long-established, have well-equipped teaching hospitals, and charge much less than private medical colleges in India. Many universities have large Indian student communities, with Indian food available in or near the hostels.

XEAL Education Works currently helps students with admission to Bashkir State Medical University in Ufa, Republic of Bashkortostan, one of Russia's oldest medical universities. Its fee and details are in the table above.

Why Indian students choose Russia

  • Government universities with long histories and large teaching hospitals.
  • Affordable fees compared with private medical colleges in India.
  • Large Indian student communities and Indian mess options at many universities.
  • Strong basic-science teaching, with modern labs and simulation centres.

Course duration and structure

Total durationAbout 6 years, including study and the internship required by the NMC
Medium of instructionMust be English for the whole course to meet NMC rules
IntakeMainly September, with applications usually from spring to summer
Licensing in IndiaFMGE (until NExT is introduced), then a 12-month internship in India

Language matters: some Russian universities run "bilingual" programmes that switch to Russian in later years. The NMC requires the entire course to be in English, so confirm that your programme is fully English-medium. You will still pick up basic Russian for talking to patients during hospital rotations, and universities teach it as a subject.

Eligibility

  • Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology: usually at least 50% in PCB (40% for reserved categories).
  • NEET-UG qualified, with a result from within the last three years.
  • At least 17 years old by 31 December of the admission year.
  • A valid passport.

Fees and living costs

Tuition depends on the university and city. Hostels are usually on campus and cost much less than private accommodation. Russian winters are cold, often well below zero, so budget for warm clothing in your first year. See the table above for Bashkir State Medical University's current fee, or contact us for the year-by-year breakdown.

NMC rules every Indian student must check

To practise in India after studying abroad, your degree must meet the National Medical Commission's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021. Before you pay any fees, make sure the university and programme meet all of these:

  • NEET-UG qualified: you must qualify NEET-UG to study MBBS abroad. The NEET result is accepted for foreign admission for three years.
  • At least 54 months of study at one university, followed by a 12-month internship at the same university.
  • English medium for the whole course.
  • The degree must let you register as a doctor in that country, on the same terms as local graduates.
  • The course must be completed within 10 years of joining.
  • Back in India, you must pass the licensing exam (currently FMGE, until NExT is introduced) and complete a 12-month supervised internship in India.

XEAL Education Works checks these points for every university before we recommend it to you.
